If you have any number of semi-valuable carpets in your home, and if you’re living with your kids and pets, cleaning the carpets can quickly become a 9 to 5 job! Jokes aside, if the above applies to you, you will have to clean your carpets frequently. And this means not only spending a lot of time, but also a lot of money. Although the time portion of the equation is harder to solve (in some cases downright impossible if you don’t want to hire professionals to do the job for you), there are quite a few things you can do to ease the strain on your budget.

Lets take a look at the most economic solutions:

1- Do it yourself!

Yes, the most economic way to clean your carpets is to do it yourself, preferably with homemade cleaning solutions. If you don’t want to make your own cleaning solutions, there are a few alternatives you can use: the Chem-Dry stain extinguisher or the Carbona Stain Devils set can help you remove most of the hard stains on your carpets. Or, if you are inclined to do so, you can simply create an effective cleaning solution by simply mixing vinegar and wool mix (2 tablespoons of each) on a half-liter spray container and fill the rest with water. Although it may not smell as nice as the commercial solutions, it will get the job done.

Once you sort out the solution, you will need a few extra tools including as many clean towels (they can be old) as you would need, a hand brush, sponge and any container filled with lukewarm water. When ready, start by dampening the stained area (just dampen, do not make it soaking wet) with the sponge. Then apply a little bit of solution and start scrubbing with circular motions. Then wipe it up with the sponge (do not forget to wring and rinse it after its initial use). The last step is to apply pressure with the clean towel to soak up dirt, cleaning solution and water. When you’re finished, the towels should be pretty dirty and the carpet a bit damp.

Like we said, this is the most economic solution but it requires a lot of effort and time.

2- Buy your own spot cleaner or full-size carpet cleaner

If you don’t have the time and don’t want to make such an effort, you may be better off buying a spot cleaner or a full-size carpet cleaner for an easier time. You can still use homemade or alternative cleaning solutions (as the solutions sold/recommended by the manufacturers usually cost a lot of money).

This is like the best of two worlds; you don’t spend a lot of money on professional services or rental machines, and yet you don’t need to make as big an effort as you would need to should you do it yourself without a machine.

If you have the budget for a decent cleaner, it may be a good investment in terms of money, time and effort, especially in the long run.

3- Use a Professional Cleaner

If you don’t have the time or desire to clean your carpets with or without a machine, then pretty much the only choice you have left is to hire a professional to do the job.
